Industry recognized for efforts to promote biodiesel, combat climate change

On January 23, 2020, the National Biodiesel Board (NBB) presented its Biodiesel Industry Partnership Award to a group of 11 business and association leaders representing the Northeast heating fuel industry.

The award was dedicated to NEFI, the Massachusetts Energy Marketers Association, Energy Marketers Association of Rhode Island, New York State Energy Coalition, Connecticut Energy Marketers Association, Vermont Fuel Dealers Association, Maine Energy Marketers Association, Fuel Merchants Association of New Jersey, Empire State Energy Association, National Oilheat Research Alliance and Westmore Fuel Co., Inc. It was presented at the National Biodiesel Conference & Expo in Tampa, Fla., following a panel discussion on the important role of biodiesel-blended Bioheat® fuel in reducing residential greenhouse gas emissions. Under the Providence Resolution, the Northeast heating fuel industry has committed to achieve 15% emissions reductions by 2023, 40% reductions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. Bioheat, already in widespread use throughout the Northeast, is helping the industry reach these goals while supporting a growing market for biodiesel.

“We accepted the award on behalf of our members, their families, and the thousands of hardworking professionals that are the lifeblood of this industry,” said NEFI President & CEO Sean Cota. “We share their passion and ongoing commitment to a strong, vibrant, and competitive industry for generations to come … this is what motivates all of us and why we continue to fight hard for the industry day-in-and-day-out.”

“Each year we recognize valuable leaders who have helped us make strides in America’s Advanced Biofuel,” said NBB CEO Donnell Rehagen. “Our association applauds and thanks these individuals and organizations for their sincere devotion to making our world better, cleaner, now!

The Northeast heating fuel industry provides renewable heating to more than 5 million homes and businesses across the region — 80% of the national heating oil market. The average retail heating fuel company is a multi-generation family-owned and -operated business with a median of 25 employees. NEFI, the nation’s largest renewable liquid heating fuel association, was a lead organizer of the 2019 Providence Summit at which the industry committed to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
