An Act to Promote Minimum Wage Consistency by Limiting the Authority of Municipalities Regarding Minimum Hourly Pay

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1.  26 MRSA §664, sub-§5 is enacted to read:

  1. 5. A municipality or other political subdivision may not enact an ordinance or other rule purporting to have the force of law under its home rule or other authority regulating the minimum hourly wage paid by an employer.  Any ordinance or other rule of a municipality or other political subdivision that regulates the minimum hourly wage paid by an employer in effect on the effective date of this subsection is unenforceable.

SUMMARY

This bill prohibits a municipality or other political subdivision of the State from enacting an ordinance regulating the minimum hourly wage that an employer must pay an employee.
